Perspective Article in Science on Topological Defects in Morphogenesis

Łucja together with John Dunlop published a Perspective article in Science, titled “Shaping tissues with defects”. The article discusses the fascinating discovery that topological defects in cell monolayers can program tissue self-organization into predictable 3D structures. The authors discuss how the same mathematical framework describing nematic order in cells may also apply at other spatial scales, including cellular membrane architecture. Geometry and topology may be key to understanding morphogenesis in developmental biology.
